The experience of the American worker is a central theme for many National Heritage Areas. This is certainly true for Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area outside of Atlanta.

For a century, Arabia Mountain and surrounding areas were quarried for their highly prized granitic stone called Tidal Grey. Used for construction and street pavers, this stone went all over the country, winding up in the Brooklyn Bridge, West Point, and the foundation of the Rayburn House Office Building in the Capitol complex in DC.

But what were the lives of the quarry workers like? It was hard, backbreaking work in the hot Georgia sun, but quarry workers still found the time to build schools and churches and use their masonry skills to help building community. A member of the National Heritage Area Caucus, Congressman Rick Allen represents Augusta Canal National Heritage Area in Georgia. In 2021, he sponsored legislation to reauthorize Augusta Canal NHA and also co-sponsored the National Heritage Area Act.

"The Cache la Poudre River National Heritage Area"

From Rocky's Spine, a river's berth,
A rushing life across the earth.
The Poudre flows, a mountain song,
Where stories old and new belong.

It starts with snow, a winter's grace,
Then carves its way with ancient pace,
Through canyons deep and wild terrain,
To reach the wide and thirsty plain.

A whisper echoes, French and old,
Of fur-clad men and winter’s cold.
Who cached their powder, storm-besieged,
A desperate act, a memory pledged.

The Arapaho and Cheyenne knew
This flowing heart, this lifeblood new.
Their homelands stretched along the stream,
Sustained by water, a living dream.
