The Alliance of National Heritage Areas is dedicated to preserving and promoting America’s past to ensure a better, more perfect tomorrow.
National Heritage Areas are a proven model of shared responsibility resulting in a cost-effective approach for the National Park Service to preserve, protect, and share the significant stories of America. We accomplish this through grass-roots coordination with local jurisdictions, non-profits and other private partners to invest in nationally significant sites that in turn spur regional economic development.
What We Did in 2023
Engaged more than 26,000 volunteers in community projects, resulting in 325,000 hours of service. That’s an estimated $10 million value for NHA communities.
Worked with 7,335 partners to conduct NHA activities, and provided grants to local organizations totaling more than $6.6 million.
Created new outdoor recreational opportunities and connections to public lands by creating or maintaining over 1,300 miles of trails and 12,300 acres of land.
Leveraged nearly $88 million in non-federal dollars, which enabled 2.4 million people to attend NHA events.
